Received 2022.04.03 | Abstract. The article discusses the main milestones in the history of the Omsk military topographic department, the 155th anniversary of the founding of which is celebrated this year. The military topographic department, established in Omsk in 1867, was not only a military institution that made a significant contribution to the solution of military-strategic and imperial tasks, but also a major research center that played an important role in the development of Omsk science. The tasks of the department included assistance in the development of the little-explored territories of the empire, its Asian outskirts, their inclusion in the economic, administrative, cultural space of the country. Military geodesists and topographers who served in Omsk were highly qualified specialists, they carried out a whole range of geodetic and topographic works aimed at creating accurate maps of the region, developed their own methods, improved geodetic instruments, made a great contribution to the comprehensive study and development of Siberia and adjacent territories. Many military men were popularizers of science, were part of the local scientific community, and were engaged in educational work. Military surveyors, topographers formed the core of the scientific and technical intelligentsia of the city, contributed to the formation of geodetic education in Omsk. The disinterested service of many of them to science and society, patriotism, devotion to the profession can be a model, an example for the present generation of scientists. |
